This is a blog not only about my travels and the practicalities of living abroad, but also one of personal betterment and positivity. I see so much frustration on expat sites about corruption, unfairness, and “barbarism” in Vietnam, and I want to combat that negativity with unflinching looks at the best this country has to offer, from the hotels I review to the people I meet and befriend.
Vietnam is a beautiful country, and yes, it can be frustrating. It can make you want to tear your hair out and scream into a pillow. But, if there’s one thing I learned in grad school, it’s to laugh at madness and chaos. And it was one of my students who gave me the beautiful mantra: “The chaos is around me, but not within me.” Just remember this the next time you get stuck in customs or get a busted taillight- the chaos may be around you, but it’s not within you. And don’t give in to solipsism- Vietnam is not a nation of Joker-esque anarchists, but an entirely different culture that invites with open arms further exploration.
